October 17 2011

Hey everyone,

Things are finally starting to cool off here. I atually have to turn down my fan in the middle of the night. I cant wait till I dont even need it! I seriously regret not fully appreciating walking into a building and it just being air conditioned. Now its a huge deal if a room has it.

Im racking my brain for anything that might have happened out of the ordinary this past week, but im coming up with not too much. It was pretty normal as far as the weeks go down here. Our mission president put a goal for us to find a new family to teach ad baptize in this month or the next, so we really tried to put some emphasis on that. The family unit is really falling apart here in Mexico and its hard to find complete familes that all are willing to listen and do what you ask like read and pray. But we did find one that turned out really interesting. Rodrigo is about 50 id say, and has two kids, 21 and 19, and of course his wife. They didnt really want to listen at first, but we are just really really, ridiculously good-looking, so they did. No not really, we just made sure they knew we wanted to help.

Rodrigo cant read and knows very little about religon. When we asked him to pray at the end of the first lesson, he wanted to but  didnt know how and wasnt catching on too quickily while we were trying to teach him. after a few minutes of going back and forth, I asked him "If God was here with us right now, what would you tell or ask him him?"  He sat there thinking, and then just starting talking, looking at the ground in between us, with the most revrent tone and sincere simple words you could think of. I looked at the rest of his family and encouraged them to bow their heads and listen. Rodrigo went on, just pouring out his heart to God, as if he was really present in the flesh. He began to weep, and asked for true guidance in his lie and the lives of his family. When he finished I helped him through how we should end and we all just sat there for a second, just kinda basking in the spirit.

It was a reminder that I had lost, as most of us do, the sincerity and real purpose behind prayer. The level fervor in your prayers is a good sign of your relationship with Heavenly Father. Do we just say our prayers because we know we should, thinking of them as just recorded files that get read and taken note of, or as a personal conversation between us and Heavenly Father that are always heard and always answered? It could very easily be something in between, but we must always strive for something more. Prayer is a very simple but powerful tool we have, and we cannot be saved without it as the Prophet Joseph Smith taught.

I wish I had more, but believe me when I say things are going well here. I thank everyone for all the emails and prayers. I hope everyone has a great week and that you can find a way to do something for someone else. Remember, love your neighbor!

Love,

Elder Kitterman
